The government of Solidaridad, in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, is committed to maintaining the high quality of its beaches. The Sustainable Environment and Climate Change Secretariat, along with the Federal Maritime and Land Zone Management (Zofemat), are leading efforts to train staff at the Blue Flag certified beaches.
Samantha Alvarez, the head of the Environment sector, emphasized the importance of creating positive change agents. She also highlighted the need to promote environmental education and sustainable development in Playa del Carmen. Alvarez noted that a close collaboration between Zofemat and Blue Flag Mexico has resulted in a training course for beach managers and supervisors. The course focuses on sustainable management and environmental conservation.
The managers of these modules, who are dedicated to implementing good practices to protect coastal environments, are stationed at the Petrel, Pelicanos, Cisne, 72, 88, Punta Esmeralda, Xcalacoco, and Montecarlo beaches. All these beaches proudly bear the Blue Flag certification.
Alvarez stated, "In Playa del Carmen, we are dedicated to sustainability and viability to ensure that current and future generations can enjoy the natural wonders that this tourist destination offers." To secure the international Blue Flag certification, beaches must meet stringent standards for water quality, environmental management and education, safety, and multiple services. These standards are set out in protocols that mandate facilities such as access points, toilets, showers, information modules, storage facilities, and security.
