On October 1st, Mayor Estefanía Mercado launched a new garbage collection operation in Playa del Carmen. The initiative, which began at Plaza 28 de Julio and continued in Villas del Sol, aims to reclaim public spaces and enhance the quality of life for residents.
In her address, Mayor Mercado emphasized the significance of maintaining a clean city for both its aesthetic appeal and the health and wellbeing of its inhabitants. She stressed that this initiative is not a temporary measure but a continual, enduring effort. She also introduced Julieta Martín Azueta as the new Secretary of Public Services.
The operation is carried out in two phases. The first phase saw the deployment of 24 garbage trucks from Red Ambiental, a waste management company, along with a pink truck symbolizing support for breast cancer awareness. The second phase, commencing in Villas del Sol, added 19 more trucks, nine municipal units, two three-ton trucks, two ten-ton trucks, and additional machinery like bobcats and a karcher. A total of 77 municipal workers are involved in the operation.
Horacio Guerra Marroquín, Director of Red Ambiental's Board of Directors, announced the addition of 25 new trucks to the fleet. These vehicles, capable of carrying up to eight tons of waste, emit 50% fewer pollutants. The fleet upgrade, which required an investment of 100 million pesos, is aimed at providing a more efficient and environmentally friendly waste collection service in Solidaridad.
Mayor Mercado also announced a campaign to encourage recycling among residents, underlining the importance of proper waste management for environmental conservation.
In closing, the mayor expressed her gratitude to the public service workers, calling them "the heart of this operation". She reaffirmed her commitment to providing an efficient, swift, and transparent garbage collection service.
