There's been a lot of debate recently about the potential renaming of the iconic Riviera Maya municipality, Solidaridad. This municipality is one of eleven in the Quintana Roo state and plays a significant role in the region's tourism and economic development.

On December 12, Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio brought up the possibility of changing the name of Solidaridad to "Playa del Carmen". This decision is to be made through a public consultation scheduled for 2025. "Playa del Carmen or Solidaridad? This is the first issue we will bring to a citizen consultation. It's not about my personal preference, but rather a decision for the community to make," said Mercado Asencio.

Solidaridad was officially established on July 28, 1993, after it separated from the Cozumel municipality due to rapid population and economic growth, primarily in Playa del Carmen. The name "Solidaridad" was chosen to honor a national program initiated during the presidency of Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994). This program aimed to combat poverty and improve living conditions in marginalized communities.

However, the name "Solidaridad" has drawn criticism for being used as a political tool to bolster the image of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Salinas de Gortari himself. There were allegations that the program's resources were distributed selectively, favoring key regions to secure votes in elections. This led to suspicions of corruption and embezzlement, issues that were prevalent in PRI administrations at the time.

The proposed name change has sparked controversy. Marciano Toledo Sánchez, the first mayor of Solidaridad and a key figure in the municipality's creation, voiced his opposition to the change just weeks before his death. He argued that the name "Solidaridad" symbolizes unity.
