The Solidaridad council has unanimously agreed to name the Meeting and Multipurpose Room of the old Municipal Palace after Marciano Toledo Sánchez. This decision honors Sánchez, who was the first president of Playa del Carmen and is remembered as a significant social advocate.
José Luis Toledo Medina spoke highly of Sánchez, referring to him as the "Hero of the small homeland in which we live." He pointed out that Playa del Carmen, thanks to the vision of Sánchez and other pioneers, has become one of the most prominent tourist destinations worldwide. Medina also highlighted that many people from all over the globe have been drawn to Playa del Carmen, making Solidaridad more than just another municipality in Mexico, but a unique place in the world.
The decision was celebrated by Sánchez's family and loved ones, including Doña Delfina Medina de Sánchez. They expressed gratitude to the council for approving the agreement. They noted that the room, which is set to house the City Museum and Cultural Center, will serve as a cultural hub, encapsulating the history and future of Playa del Carmen.
Medina also spoke about the importance of not only honoring Sánchez's name but also the causes he championed. He emphasized that Sánchez's name has been a fixture in the public life of Quintana Roo for over three decades, a testament to his enduring influence and dedication to social causes.
The meeting room is the only part of the old Municipal Palace not included in the Loan Agreement signed with the Municipal Culture and Arts Institute. The institute will manage the building following Mayor Estefanía Mercado's proposal to transform it into the Museum and Cultural Center of Playa del Carmen.
