Four Cardinals Development Mexico, a Spanish property development company, is embroiled in a dispute with Mayan indigenous communities in Quintana Roo. The company, known for its hotel and holiday residential projects on the Mayan Riviera, allegedly attempted to seize land from a Mayan indigenous man, Roberto Chan Puc, in January 2023. Chan Puc had purchased the land in question, known as "El Pocito", in 2005 and had since built a concrete house on it.

The case also involves Fabiola Cortés, a journalist, lawyer, and founder of the organization "We Are Your Eyes". The Spanish company is demanding that she pay millions of dollars in damages, both material and moral. The company's proposed project, "Amares Riviera Maya", is set to span 400 hectares and includes a strategically located 43-hectare plot on Federal Highway 307 kilometer 263.

According to a report by Diario Cambio, Four Cardinals Development has a track record of appropriating land from individuals of Mayan origin. Chan Puc has initiated legal proceedings to safeguard his property and has also reported the refusal of Quintana Roo's Attorney General to accept his criminal complaint.

The case remains unresolved. Chan Puc is battling to retain his property, Cortés is dealing with a million-dollar lawsuit, and Four Cardinals Development is striving to progress with their project despite the mounting complaints.
