A waterspout was recently spotted forming over the sea at Xpuhá Beach in Playa del Carmen. This incredible phenomenon was likely triggered by impending rainfall in the Quintana Roo region.
Images of the massive waterspout have been circulating on social media, leaving residents in awe. The sheer size of the waterspout made it visible from afar, prompting locals to capture the towering column of water that formed off Xpuhá Beach.
The State Civil Protection Coordination has since announced that over the next few hours, several municipalities in Quintana Roo can expect rainfall, wind gusts reaching up to 40 km/h, and potential lightning strikes.
A waterspout, also known as a water funnel, is an intense vortex or whirlwind that forms over a body of water, typically connected to a cumuliform cloud. Waterspouts are categorized into two types: tornadic and non-tornadic. As the names suggest, tornadic waterspouts are essentially tornadoes, either formed over water or initially formed on land and subsequently moved over a body of water. Non-tornadic waterspouts, while similar in appearance, are not classified as tornadoes.
