Monkey Business: Spider Monkeys in Playa Del Carmen Face Relocation

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) is currently working to capture and relocate two spider monkeys spotted in the Residencial Caribe subdivision. Samantha Álvarez, the Secretary of Environment and Climate Change of Solidaridad, has stated that the primary challenge in this operation is the residential location of the monkeys, which allows them to easily evade capture attempts.

Álvarez has urged the public to refrain from feeding the monkeys. This action could lead the monkeys to become habituated to human interaction, making their capture and relocation even more difficult. She stressed the importance of community cooperation in adhering to these guidelines, to ensure the wellbeing of the monkeys and their successful relocation to a suitable environment.

Profepa, the agency tasked with wildlife protection and habitat conservation, will continue to coordinate with local authorities to ensure the monkeys are safely moved to a risk-free area. In the meantime, local residents remain vigilant and are adhering to the recommendations provided by the authorities.
