On March 20th, the spring equinox will occur at the breathtaking archaeological site of Chichen Itza in Yucatan. At precisely 16:01 hours, the play of light and shadow will outline a serpent's body on the north side of the building known as "El Castillo" or "Kukulcan's Temple". This is a day when day and night are of equal length.
Thousands of visitors, both local and international, flock to this event to bask in the intense sunlight. Many choose to wear white and adopt a positive mindset, using the occasion to shed negative thoughts. The aim is to enjoy the experience without making impossible requests to the Mayan deities.
Darío Flota, Secretary of Tourist Promotion of Yucatan, is a keen advocate of this tradition. He anticipates that between March 20 and 23, approximately 7,000 people will visit each day, with about 70% being foreign tourists.
To accommodate the influx of visitors, nearby "Tren Maya" stations (Valladolid and Chichen Itza) are preparing to offer reasonably priced connection services. In an effort to preserve the site, Flota explains that the serpent's image can also be observed a week before and after the equinox.
On March 13th, Flota took part in the presentation of the Spring Equinox Operation 2025. This was led by the Cultur Trust, state secretaries of Public Security and Tourism Promotion, the Agency of Fiscal Administration of Yucatan (AAFY), the National Institute of Migration, the Red Cross, Health Sector, state and municipal police, Benito Juarez University, Pisté Unit, and Civil Protection.
This event is a unique opportunity to promote the many tourist attractions that Yucatan has to offer. However, it's important to note that during the four-day celebration, no ceremonies will be permitted, nor will professional photographic and video equipment be allowed without express authorization. Drones, cigarettes, sharp objects, alcoholic beverages, and narcotics are also prohibited within the archaeological zone.
Flota, known for his passion for tourism promotion, is already planning for the future. He is currently working to incorporate the MEXICO brand into his tourism promotion strategy following a recent agreement with the Federal Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez. With a team of public relations professionals by his side, Flota is set to surprise us with initiatives to increase tourist visits to the state. Keep an eye on his upcoming announcements.
