Three taco vendors, previously detained for the death of a man who attempted to rob "La Planchita" taqueria, were released early yesterday morning. The release was granted under certain legal conditions, according to unofficial sources from the State Attorney General's Office. The sources also clarified that the investigation is ongoing and the vendors could be re-arrested if further incriminating evidence is found.
The incident took place last Thursday morning when several armed men stormed into the "La Planchita" taco stand, located on Politécnico Avenue. The robbers threatened the employees and attempted to steal their belongings. During a moment of distraction, three of the vendors managed to disarm the robbers. A struggle ensued, during which one of the robbers was stabbed in the torso. He later died from his injuries at the IMSS hospital in Region 510.
Following the incident, the vendors, identified as José, 28; Francisco, 31; and Alfonso, 55, were arrested by municipal police. They were charged with homicide and assault. Their arrest sparked controversy on social media, with many users arguing that the vendors were acting in self-defense.
The public outcry reached such a level that some users began organizing a protest march demanding the vendors' release. After a 48-hour investigation period, a control judge reviewed the evidence collected by the police. This evidence included witness interviews and a statement from one of the alleged robbers, 19-year-old Alexis, who had been detained by the vendors during the robbery. Ultimately, the judge decided to release the three vendors early yesterday morning, albeit under certain legal conditions.
