A taxi driver from the Andrés Quintana Roo union is facing accusations of drugging and sexually assaulting a female passenger. The allegations came to light on social media this Sunday.
The victim reportedly hailed the taxi on Kabah Avenue, outside the Technological Institute of Cancun. She informed family members that she was on her way home, but shortly after, she lost consciousness.
When she woke up, she found herself in a motel with the taxi driver. She managed to escape his clutches and lock herself in the bathroom, where she called for help. Before the driver fled the scene, she was able to take photos of him. These images are now circulating on social media as part of the evidence against him.
Adding to the evidence, motel staff confirmed that the woman was unconscious when she arrived. This supports the claim that she was drugged. Following the incident, the victim promptly filed a complaint with the State General Prosecutor's Office.
In a concerning twist, it was reported that the alleged perpetrator followed her to the prosecutor's office. Despite requests for police assistance, he was not arrested. The victim's family and friends have since appealed to the public for help in identifying the driver and securing his arrest. They have also warned other women against hailing the accused taxi.
Feminist groups and concerned citizens have called on authorities to ramp up security measures and respond swiftly to instances of gender violence, particularly when the offender has been identified.
The investigation is ongoing, and the victim is currently in hospital. She is awaiting toxicology test results to confirm if she was indeed drugged.
