Teachers in Quintana Roo are continuing their strike. The ongoing teacher’s strike in Quintana Roo shows no signs of ending, as the Central Committee of Teacher Struggle has announced new measures in response to the reform of the ISSSTE Law, which directly affects their pension system.

It’s crucial to note that the indefinite strike began following a reform proposal to the ISSSTE Law presented by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The teachers are unhappy with this proposal as it brings into question the pensions they will receive in the future.

But despite President Claudia Sheinbaum announcing that she had withdrawn the proposed reform of the ISSSTE Law , teachers in Mexico and Quintana Roo are maintaining their indefinite strike, as it seems there is still a long way to go before their return actually happens.

Why are Quintana Roo teachers on strike?

The National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), together with the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), are mobilizing in response to opposition to the ISSSTE Law 2025 and to demand a reduction in the number of years a teacher must work before he or she can retire, from 40 to 30 for men and from 38 to 28.

In addition, they are requesting the repeal of the PEÑA-AMLO Education Reform , social equity, job stability, a 100% salary increase directly to the Base Salary, and reinstatement to the pension system, without UMAS or AFORES.

When will classes resume in Quintana Roo?

According to teachers, classes in Quintana Roo are likely to resume next week, following the conclusion of the pending protests in the state. Therefore, parents are advised to adhere to the guidelines of educational institutions.

So far, neither the SEP nor the SEQ have set a specific date; however, it is anticipated that teachers will end their recess quickly so they can continue with the 2025 academic year calendar normally and without further delays.
