Over 50 teachers staged a protest on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue, blocking the road for more than 10 minutes. The protest took place on the southern side of the avenue, directly in front of the SSA Mexico International Pier. This demonstration was strategically timed to coincide with the arrival of two cruise ships at this terminal and two more at Puerta Maya. The teachers' aim was to apply pressure for their demands relating to the non-approval of the ISSSTE Law reform to be met.
The teachers, who have been on strike for over a month, assembled in this high tourist traffic area, near the Royal Village square and the entrance to SSA Mexico Pier. They blocked both vehicular and pedestrian access for more than 10 minutes during the protest.
Carlos Pech Moreno, the spokesperson for the Fight Committee on the island, shared on social media that this was a peaceful protest. The teachers held signs to draw the attention of the Federal Government to their cause, which is to ensure the definitive cancellation of the ISSSTE Law reform. Despite President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announcing the suspension of the reform, it has not yet been officially signed.
The blockade, which lasted for more than 10 minutes, was not intended to disrupt tourism but to apply pressure for their demands to be met. However, the strike, which has now lasted over a month, has sparked discussions on social media about its impact on the academic performance of preschool, primary, and secondary students. Some tourists reportedly chose to return to their cruise ships, while others cancelled their vehicle rentals and tours. This has led to frustration among providers of tourist services.
