In honor of the National Day of Older Adults, celebrated every 28th of August, the "The Oscars" awards were held this week in Cancún. The event recognized the outstanding contributions and social activism of senior citizens in 10 different categories. The awards were given to participants in various programs of the DIF Benito Juárez System.
Mariana Elhers received the award in the "Volunteering" category. Rosalba Trejo Aguilar, from the Club de la Esperanza, was recognized as the "Most Likable Senior Citizen". Diego Renato Ancona, also from Club de la Esperanza, won the “Senior Citizen Dancer" category. Alfonso Chávez Zamora, another member of Club de la Esperanza, was awarded the “Best Senior Citizen Singer". Guadalupe Balderrama, from Amanecer es Ver el Sol, received the award in the "Senior Citizen Assistantship" category.
Other recipients included Manuel Gaspar Sánchez Pech, from Casa Transitoria Grandes Corazones, who was named the "Happiest Senior Citizen". Guadalupe Granda Valerio, from Club de la Esperanza, won the “Sporty Senior Citizen" category. Juan Angel Garrido, from Amanecer es Ver el Sol, was recognized as the "Most Creative Senior Citizen". Antolina Santaman Santaman, from Estancia Nohoch-Nah, was awarded the "Most Fashionable Senior Citizen" category.
In the "Exemplary Senior Citizen" category, the awardees were Irma Teresa Hernández Rodríguez and Pablo Villegas, both from Club de la Esperanza.
The award ceremony took place at the Turquesa Hall in Cancún. The Municipal President, Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, the honorary president of the DIF Quintana Roo System, Verónica Lezama Espinosa, and the director of the DIF Benito Juárez, Marisol Sendo Rodríguez, led the event. The State Citizen Security Orchestra provided live music for the ceremony.
