Playa Del Carmen Ranchers Seek Increased Municipal Support
Article
In Playa Del Carmen, local cattle ranchers convened on Friday to discuss pressing issues and establish a work plan with President Estefanía Mercado. Martín Ávila Gama, the newly elected president of the Ranchers Association of Solidaridad, appealed to the municipal authorities to recognize ranchers as more than just farmers. He emphasized their role as essential food suppliers, providing the community with chicken, pork, lamb, beef, and honey.
During the meeting, the group stressed the need for the Solidaridad City Council's Agricultural Development Director to either understand the challenges faced by the ranching community or be advised by members of the ranching association. "We want them to see that we are united and we have a lot of work," said Ávila Gama. He acknowledged that the pandemic had caused them to let their guard down but assured that they are now getting back on track.
Fernando Chico, a prominent producer, suggested creating a comprehensive inventory of the ranchers, including the number of livestock and honey production. This would help authorities understand the significance of their work. Another producer, Raúl Méndez, proposed presenting a list of candidates who could advise the Agricultural Development Directorate.
One of the immediate needs of the sector is access to a veterinarian to oversee animal health. They also require a supply of 15 tons of corn for the silo provided by the previous administration of Lili Campos. This is essential as the majority of local ranchers, who raise pigs, chickens, and lambs, rely on corn as a primary feed source.
The meeting concluded with an appeal to President Estefanía Mercado to supply the necessary corn and recognize the effort and unity of the ranching sector.
