Residents of the port community of El Cuyo have raised concerns over the extraction of sand from their coastal dunes. They allege that Gabriel Aguiñaga Medina and Henry Polanco Correa, officials from the Tizimín municipality, ordered the sand extraction for street repairs. The community deems this action as a federal crime due to its potential environmental impact.

Interestingly, these same officials had previously stopped the former administration from using sand extracted from dredging works to construct a park in Tizimín two years ago. The community is now voicing their displeasure and demanding alternative methods for street repair that won't harm the ecosystem.

The municipality's director of tourism shared images on social media of the extracted sand being used on the streets. They defended the action, stating that "what belongs to the people is for the people". However, this sentiment was not shared by the local residents who have called for respect for environmental laws.

In response, the residents of El Cuyo have halted further sand extraction and appealed to the relevant authorities to ensure the protection of their natural resources.
