TOURIST TRAGEDY: Fatal Cozumel Boating Mishap

A group of people by the dockside near moored boats, some wearing diving suits and others in casual attire, preparing for an excursion at sea.

A tourist tragically lost his life yesterday after falling overboard from the boat "Tortuga Carey". The incident allegedly occurred due to negligence on the part of the crew, who failed to notice the accident as they returned from a tour at dusk.

The group had been touring the El Cielo area and were on their way back when the unfortunate incident happened. Disturbingly, no one seemed to notice when the man fell overboard. To make matters worse, the boat was not equipped with lights, a standard feature on most boats that facilitates night-time searches.

By the time the crew realized a passenger was missing and returned to search for him, it was too late. The man had drowned. The crew immediately retrieved the body and rushed back to Marina Fonatur.

In an attempt to control the narrative, security personnel initially attempted to restrict media access to the incident. However, local nautical service providers have raised concerns about the safety of vessels returning from the El Cielo area after dark. They point out that many tourists consume alcohol during these excursions, which combined with the darkness, significantly increases the risk of accidents at sea.

There is a consensus that stricter regulations are needed, with permits no longer being issued to inexperienced individuals to serve as boat captains or sailors. Recent statistics reveal a worrying trend, with approximately 150 tourist vessels lacking the necessary documentation to legally provide their services.
