Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A national tourist has become part of the tragic statistics of this year’s Holy Week holiday season after drowning at Xpu-Há Beach. According to authorities, the victim had been consuming alcoholic beverages, impairing their ability to assess the risks of entering the water.
Witnesses Report Victim Swept Away by Current
Bystanders reported that shortly after entering the water, the individual was pulled under by strong currents. Lifeguards attempted resuscitation using CPR but were unsuccessful. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when beachgoers observed the man struggling against the waves moments after he began swimming. Despite efforts by rescuers to reach him in time, he was unresponsive when brought ashore.
Alcohol Implicated in Fatal Incident
Local authorities confirmed that the tragedy stemmed from the victim’s overconfidence while intoxicated. The man had arrived at the beach around 1:00 p.m. accompanied by friends and began drinking alcohol without considering the consequences. Two hours later, the fatal incident unfolded.
His companions, also under the influence, failed to notice his distress as he battled the current. Other tourists alerted lifeguards, who initiated a rescue attempt in full view of onlookers, including the victim’s acquaintances.
Authorities Conduct Investigation
Municipal authorities and personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, including forensic services, arrived at the scene to carry out procedures, including the removal of the body, which was transported to the Forensic Medical Service facilities.
This drowning adds to the concerning toll of fatalities during the Holy Week holiday period in the region.
