Officers from the Solidaridad Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat in Playa del Carmen have been accused of attempting to extort money from a group of foreign tourists. The officers allegedly threatened to impound the tourists' vehicle unless they paid a sum of money, highlighting a potential corruption issue within the police force.

A video circulating on social media shows the tourists being stopped by municipal police at a southern checkpoint. The officers asked for the tourists' documents to check if the vehicle had been reported stolen. What initially appeared to be a routine inspection quickly escalated into an alleged extortion attempt.

The tourists claim they were detained for over half an hour at the checkpoint, during which time the officers demanded three thousand dollars for their release. The video shows a local resident intervening, questioning the officers about their demands for both documents and money.

The tourists confirmed that the officers had demanded a payment of three thousand dollars for their release. However, no money was handed over once the alleged extortion attempt was exposed.

The video has since gone viral, with many advising against visiting Playa del Carmen due to concerns over corruption within the Citizen Security Secretariat. The organization, led by Raul Alberto Tassinari Gonzalez, is accused of exploiting the high volume of tourists in the area.

This incident not only raises questions about corruption and abuse of power within the Solidaridad Municipal Citizen Security Secretariat, but also damages the organization's reputation. Such events contribute to public mistrust, leaving many unsure whether to be more wary of thieves or the police themselves.
