The municipal administration of Puerto Morelos, headed by Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, is facing criticism following the tragic death of a tourist at Blue Flag Beach. The incident has highlighted a severe lack of emergency services in this popular tourist destination.

The tragedy unfolded on a Saturday afternoon when an elderly man drowned near the beach's watchtower. Witnesses claim the on-duty lifeguard failed to respond promptly to calls for help. The situation worsened due to poor coordination of emergency services. Police arrived 30 minutes after the initial distress call and inadvertently blocked the ambulance entrance. It took a staggering 48 minutes for an ambulance to reach the scene, a delay that is unacceptable in any emergency situation.

Reports suggest that the two ambulances owned by the municipality were otherwise occupied, one at the Vidanta complex and the other at an undisclosed location. As a result, additional support had to be called in from Cancun, further delaying the response time.

This incident has cast a spotlight on the significant issues facing Puerto Morelos under Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz's administration, including allegations of connections with organized crime in the Ruta de los Cenotes area. The lack of equipment, shortage of trained personnel, and apparent governmental indifference are putting both locals and tourists at risk.

As the busy Holy Week approaches, residents are demanding immediate action. They are calling for more than just drills and publicity stunts; they want a functional emergency system that can ensure the safety of everyone in the community.

The people of Puerto Morelos and the tourists who visit this Caribbean paradise deserve better. It is crucial that authorities take action to prevent further loss of life due to insufficient emergency services.
