Tourists Beware: Theft Rampant in Bacalar

Two European tourists experienced unfortunate incidents during their stay in Bacalar, Mexico. Both individuals had their vehicles burglarized, with thieves making off with valuable items and cash.

In the first incident, a Belgian man reported a theft from his red Chevrolet Beat. The vehicle was broken into in broad daylight while parked near the Beach Club on Costera Avenue. Among the stolen items were bank cards, a mobile phone, two suitcases of diving equipment, and approximately 300 euros in cash, equivalent to over 6,500 Mexican pesos.

A second incident involved a French tourist, aged around 51. Upon returning to his gray Aveo, he noticed signs of forced entry on the driver's door. A subsequent inventory revealed the loss of a pair of sneakers, two bags of clothing, diving equipment, a credit card, and a camera valued at over 12,000 pesos.

Both tourists lodged complaints with the Bacalar authorities. Local security forces responded to the reports but did not announce any arrests connected to the incidents. The tourists were directed to file their complaints with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE), which has since initiated investigations to identify the culprits.

These incidents come on the heels of a recent burglary report from a local resident. The individual reported a break-in at his home during his absence, with several belongings and approximately 200,000 pesos from a safe stolen. As with the tourist incidents, no arrests have been made in this case.
