Trans Woman Survives Brutal Hate Crime Attack in Cancún

An ambulance from ISSSTE parked outside a hospital emergency entrance with medical staff and patients nearby under a clear sky.

A trans woman was critically injured in a shooting in Cancún, Mexico, on Wednesday. The incident, which is suspected to be a hate crime, occurred in the Prado Norte subdivision, on avenue 3 of the Supermanzana 260. Witnesses report that individuals on a motorcycle opened fire on the woman, leaving her severely wounded.

The victim was reportedly with another person at the time of the shooting, who fled the scene when the gunfire started.

Emergency services were called to the scene, with officers from the Benito Juárez Public Safety Department initiating their investigation. Paramedics from the private company, Blue Code, also attended the scene and transported the woman to Cancún General Hospital "Jesús Kumate Rodríguez". Her condition is currently reported as critical.

While the motive for the shooting has not been officially confirmed, the nature of the attack suggests it may have been a hate crime. The assailants reportedly shot the woman at point-blank range, even after she had been injured and was on the ground. However, investigators have not ruled out any potential leads in their ongoing investigation.
