Flood Concerns in Cancun: President Criticizes Infrastructure Planning

The president of the South Zone Chapter of the Collegiate of Civil Engineers of Quintana Roo, José Juan Miguel Chí Chiquil, has expressed concern over the lack of planning in infrastructure projects. He specifically mentioned the issue of flooding, which was notably problematic in June. Chí Chiquil believes that all three levels of government need to invest in planning studies to ensure that infrastructure projects do not exacerbate flooding problems.

Chí Chiquil pointed out that new roads and highways are being built in areas that were previously natural water filtration zones. This lack of foresight, he argues, could lead to future flooding issues. He stressed the importance of investing in planning studies to ensure that road infrastructure does not interfere with the natural flow and filtration of water.

The Collegiate of Civil Engineers has contributed to updating the Risk Atlas for the municipality of Othón P. Blanco. However, Chí Chiquil noted that they have not been invited to participate in work groups or forums discussing the recent floods. While individual civil engineers are contributing to these discussions, Chí Chiquil hopes that the Collegiate will be included in future planning.

Chí Chiquil also highlighted the impact of the Mayan Train construction on flooding. He explained that the construction is blocking natural water runoff and lacks a plan for the construction of hydraulic infrastructure. This oversight has led to the creation of embankments, which act as dikes and cause water to accumulate.

Chí Chiquil emphasized the need for transparency and collaboration. He believes that the Collegiate should be informed about the project, not to criticize it, but to contribute to solving the problems it is currently causing. He also suggested that they could recommend additional works to prevent further flooding.
