Cancun, Quintana Roo – On April 14, 2025, the Tren Maya introduced its inaugural express service between Cancún and Mérida, marking a significant enhancement in travel options across the Yucatán Peninsula. This express train, designated as Train 307/308, offers a non-stop journey between the two cities, reducing travel time by approximately 30 minutes compared to the standard service.

Enhanced Travel Efficiency

The express service utilizes the same X’Trapolis Tsíimin K’áak trainsets as other Tren Maya routes but distinguishes itself by eliminating intermediate stops. While the standard service between Cancún and Mérida includes six stops and takes about 3 hours and 51 minutes, the express train’s non-stop approach significantly cuts down on travel time. This efficiency is achieved by removing the cumulative 32 minutes typically spent at stations and optimizing acceleration and deceleration phases. Currently operating on diesel power with a top speed of 142 km/h, the trains are expected to achieve speeds up to 160 km/h once electrification is complete, potentially reducing travel times further.

In addition to the express service, Tren Maya has expanded its offerings with increased frequencies on the Cancún–Tulum and Bacalar–Palenque routes. These enhancements aim to improve connectivity across key destinations, facilitating easier access to cultural and historical sites throughout the region.

Understanding Tren Maya Operations

The Tren Maya is a 1,554 km inter-city railway traversing five southeastern Mexican states: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. With 34 stations, including 20 major ones, the network connects major tourist destinations, archaeological sites, and local communities. The project, operated by the Mexican Armed Forces, seeks to boost regional development and tourism while preserving cultural heritage.

Ticketing and Accessibility

Tickets for Tren Maya services can be purchased through the official website or at station kiosks. The trains offer different classes, including Tourist and Premier, catering to various passenger preferences. Stations are equipped with amenities to ensure a comfortable travel experience, and efforts are ongoing to improve accessibility and connectivity to and from train stations.
