Tropical Storm Helene Nearing Cozumel and Cancún, Stay Alert!

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has announced that Tropical Storm Helene is likely to make landfall between Cozumel and Cancún on Wednesday morning. The governor stressed that the public should remain vigilant as the storm's path remains uncertain, with potential impacts to the north of Quintana Roo, near Cozumel and Cancún.

The National Weather Service has stated that the storm was located 75 kilometers east-northeast of Cozumel and 85 kilometers southeast of Cancun at 3 am, moving northwest at a speed of 15 km/h. If it continues at this pace, the storm is expected to hit the coast around 9 am.

Helene is currently carrying maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h, with gusts up to 120 km/h. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, ranging from 150 to 250 millimeters, along with strong winds with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, high swells of 3 to 5 meters, and the potential for waterspouts.

Governor Espinosa is urging residents to stay informed through official channels and to adhere to the "Triple A" safety protocol: be Attentive, Alert, and Safe.

Prevention measures are in place, with a hurricane prevention zone active from Cabo Catoche to Tulum, including Cozumel. A tropical storm prevention area has also been established from Río Lagartos, Yucatán, to Cabo Catoche, Quintana Roo. In terms of weather alerts, the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Isla Mujeres, Lázaro Cárdenas, Puerto Morelos, and Cozumel are under an Orange Alert (High Danger), while Solidaridad, Tulum, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto are on a Yellow Alert (Moderate Danger). The southern municipalities of the state, including José María Morelos, Bacalar, and Othón P. Blanco, are on a Green Alert (Low Danger).

The National Water Commission (Conagua) and the State Civil Protection Coordination have advised residents to follow all preventive guidelines and to stay at home in high-risk areas until the storm has passed. The governor concluded her announcement by urging the public not to let their guard down and to follow all recommendations.
