Mayan Serpent Descends Chichen Itza Pyramid on Spring Equinox

A group of tourists, including a man raising his hands, admire the iconic El Castillo pyramid at Chichen Itza under a cloudy sky.

In front of a crowd of 8,620 spectators, the shadowy illusion of the Kukulcán serpent descended the pyramid of Chichen Itza, marking the spring equinox of 2025. This event, steeped in ancient tradition, began precisely at 16:20 hours on Thursday. During the equinox, the sun aligns directly with the Earth's Equator, creating a perfect balance of light and darkness. The phenomenon at Chichén Itzá is a spectacle eagerly awaited throughout the year, with the pyramid's shadow creating the illusion of a serpent slowly descending its stairs.

The 'Serpent of Kukulcán', revered by the Mayan people as a creator and protector deity, is brought to life by the interplay of light and shadow. The spectacle leaves spectators in awe. Tourists, equipped with cameras and cell phones, captured the magic of the day, as the sunlight began to define the figure of the Kukulcán serpent on the pyramid's stairs. The crowd paused to watch the astronomical spectacle unfold, with some even offering silent prayers in recognition of the profound connection between Earth and the cosmos, a relationship deeply understood and celebrated by the Mayans over a thousand years ago.

The serpent of light appeared to shine brilliantly as it descended to the base of the pyramid, as if Kukulcán himself was descending to bring prosperity, rain, and fertility to the region. Despite brief interruptions by cloud cover, the spectacle lasted for approximately 20 minutes, starting at 16:20 hours. The event can be witnessed in the coming days, from Friday until March 23, between 4 to 5 in the afternoon at Chichén Itzá, and also at other archaeological sites such as Dzibilchaltún from 6 in the morning.

It's worth noting that a foreign tourist was arrested by federal agents after breaking protocol and security ropes to climb the pyramid of Kukulcán, also known as El Castillo. The individual is now facing the appropriate sanctions.
