Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico — Local authorities and tourism operators in Tulum are preparing for a surge in visitors during the upcoming holiday period, as the popular coastal destination continues to attract domestic and international travelers. With its pristine beaches, archaeological sites, and vibrant nightlife, Tulum remains one of Mexico’s most sought-after vacation spots.

Anticipating Record-Breaking Tourism Numbers

Hotel occupancy rates are projected to exceed 90% during the holiday season, according to the Tulum Hotel Association. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when occupancy hovered around 85%.

The influx is partly attributed to improved air connectivity, with several airlines adding direct flights to Cancún International Airport, the primary gateway for travelers heading to Tulum. Additionally, the recent opening of the Tulum International Airport (Felipe Carrillo Puerto) has provided an alternative for regional flights, easing congestion and improving accessibility.

Infrastructure and Security Preparations

To manage the expected crowds, municipal authorities have implemented a series of measures, including increased police presence in high-traffic areas and expanded public transportation options. Additional shuttle services will operate between downtown Tulum, hotel zones, and major attractions such as the Tulum Archaeological Site and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

“We are coordinating with state and federal agencies to ensure a smooth experience for both visitors and residents,” said Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón. “Our priority is maintaining safety, cleanliness, and efficient mobility throughout the holiday season.”

Local businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and restaurant sectors, are also gearing up for the rush. Many establishments plan to extend operating hours and hire temporary staff to accommodate the higher volume of customers.

Environmental Concerns and Sustainable Tourism

While the economic benefits of tourism are undeniable, environmental groups have raised concerns about the strain on Tulum’s fragile ecosystems. Overdevelopment, waste management, and water scarcity remain pressing issues for the region.

“We welcome visitors, but we must also protect our natural resources,” said Gabriela Morales, spokesperson for the Tulum Environmental Collective. “Tourists and businesses alike need to be mindful of sustainable practices to ensure Tulum remains a paradise for future generations.”

In response, the local government has reinforced regulations on single-use plastics and launched awareness campaigns promoting responsible tourism. Hotels and tour operators are increasingly adopting eco-friendly initiatives, such as solar energy use and waste reduction programs.

A Boost for the Local Economy

The holiday season is expected to inject millions of pesos into Tulum’s economy, benefiting not only large resorts but also small businesses, artisans, and service providers. Street vendors, tour guides, and taxi operators are among those anticipating a profitable period.

“This is our busiest time of the year,” said María López, a local souvenir shop owner. “We rely on these months to sustain our business through the slower seasons.”

With preparations in full swing, Tulum is poised to welcome visitors with its signature blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern amenities. Authorities remain optimistic that the holiday season will reinforce the destination’s reputation as a premier global travel hotspot.
