Tulum Mayor Faces Public Vote – Should He Stay or Go?

From next Wednesday, Gabriel Sifri will be setting up a booth near the Municipal Palace of Tulum, inviting citizens to voice their opinion on the potential removal of Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo from office.

Sifri, a member of the local group "Tulum Somos Todos", plans to set up his booth at the entrance of the Municipal Palace. He will provide questionnaires for citizens to express their views on the current administration.

Sifri has expressed his dissatisfaction with Castañón Trejo's administration, which began in March 2023 following the death of former mayor Marciano Dzul Caamal. Castañón Trejo, originally from Mexico City, won the mayoral election in June 2024. According to Sifri, his tenure has been the most problematic since the district became the ninth municipality on May 19, 2008.

Sifri attributes the administration's shortcomings to Castañón's unfamiliarity with Tulum, as well as the recent murder of the head of Public Security, Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, among other issues.

Sifri stated, "This is the worst public administration we've had since becoming a municipality. We've seen issues with land use payments, construction permits, driving licenses, administration of justice, thefts, homicides, femicides, and charges to merchants, not to mention the rampant sale of narcotics by organized crime."

The questionnaire provided by Sifri includes six questions addressing the various problems faced by the residents of Tulum. The final question asks citizens whether they agree with the proposal to revoke Castañón's mandate.
