“Tulum Company Transforms 100 Tons of Sargassum Monthly – A Sustainable Innovation!”

Group Guma, a company based in Tulum, is repurposing at least 100 tons of sargassum each month. The seaweed is transformed into an organic material that can be used as compost or fertilizer. This is the first time the company has ventured into the treatment of this type of organic matter.

In addition to this, Group Guma also aids in solid waste collection efforts on Isla Mujeres. The company processes a significant amount of sargassum every week, which is supplied by the local authority responsible for collecting the seaweed.

There are instances when the company has to pause the intake of new sargassum. This is to allow time for the drying, treatment, and pulverization of the accumulated seaweed, preventing oversaturation.

Group Guma's president, Sandy Burgos, is proud of the work the company is doing in Tulum. She believes that their efforts could potentially be replicated in other municipalities such as Solidaridad or Isla Mujeres in the future.
