Tulum Tourism Boom Threatens Ancient Ruins: 2024 Deadline

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has reported a significant increase in tourist numbers in Tulum during the health crisis. The institute warns that by 2024, the area will reach a saturation point that could result in irreversible damage to its archaeological sites. Currently, Tulum receives an average of 16,000 tourists per day.

The Pyramid of the Castle, a popular attraction in Tulum, saw more than 40,872 visitors in December of last year. This figure surpasses the 35,072 visitors recorded in the previous month. The escalating visitor numbers highlight the urgent need for sustainable tourism practices to preserve Tulum's archaeological treasures.
