Still no date for cell phone service from Tulum to FCP

While negotiations are progressing, the state government has yet to hear from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) or the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) regarding the use of towers installed for the Mayan Train project. This would enable cellular communication in the so-called “silent zone” extending from Felipe Carrillo Puerto to Tulum.

Javier Ayuso Sánchez, director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology, stated that the state government has planned since the start of this administration to expand cellular coverage throughout the state. This is particularly important in areas such as the short route to Mérida and the silent zone, in response to persistent requests from residents.

The institute is working with Sedena and various mobile phone operators, and is open to proposals from those interested in participating in the projects. However, they are still awaiting responses from Sedena and the CFE regarding the use of the Mayan Train towers.

Sánchez confirmed that currently, the mobile phone signal extends as far as Tulum International Airport, but the signal quality needs improvement. He also noted that there is no defined budget for extending cellphone coverage in the silent zones. Although funds were initially allocated, this changed with the construction of the Mayan Train, and the revised budget has not yet been announced.

The state government is prepared to invest in the project, and they are hoping for a contribution from the federation as well. They are eagerly awaiting a response from Sedena.
