An elderly individual exhibiting symptoms of a heart attack was transported to the IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Tulum via a Red Cross ambulance. However, the hospital director declined to admit the patient, citing an absence of necessary medication and equipment for proper care. This refusal necessitated the patient's transfer to the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen, thereby increasing the potential for complications due to the extended transit time.
This incident is not unique. Reports from local citizens indicate that similar situations have occurred repeatedly, leaving patients without the immediate care they need. The hospital director's actions have sparked discontent among healthcare workers and the wider community, who are questioning the lack of supplies and the hospital's overall operational capacity.
In light of these events, the patient's family has urged the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to investigate the situation and ensure that the hospital is equipped with the necessary resources and qualified staff to provide timely medical care. The region's hospitals have repeatedly faced issues related to inadequate infrastructure and equipment. As a result, the health of local residents often depends on emergency transfers to other municipalities. This not only increases the strain on nearby hospitals but also jeopardizes the lives of those in immediate need of medical attention.
