An explosion occurred in the machine room of a hotel situated in the Aldea Zamá complex in Tulum, leading to the spread of toxic smoke. This incident caused alarm among guests and employees. The explosion, which took place at the corner of Kabah street and Ek Balam, is thought to have been caused by a build-up of gases from chemicals used for the hotel's pool maintenance.
The loud blast startled those present, prompting some to rush onto the street and dial 911. Shortly after, the local fire department arrived to manage the situation, using hoses to disperse the smoke emanating from the impacted area.
Civil Protection also sprung into action, implementing safety protocols and evacuating nearby individuals to prevent potential harm from the fumes released post-explosion. Hotel staff indicated that the incident resulted from an incorrect mix of pool maintenance chemicals, leading to a gas build-up in the machine room.
Following the emergency, the authorities temporarily closed the site to conduct an investigation into whether the hotel adhered to safety regulations regarding chemical handling. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, though the incident did cause a brief period of high tension among guests and employees.
