Residents of Tulum will continue to enjoy free access to the public beaches of Jaguar Park. This follows an agreement secured by the municipal president, Diego Castañón Trejo, with the federation. The agreement ensures that locals can continue to enter the beaches by simply presenting their voter's card (INE). This maintains their right to enjoy public spaces, and addresses concerns about the potential introduction of a beach access fee for locals. Such a fee could have impacted the free enjoyment of one of Tulum's most iconic natural resources, renowned globally for its beauty.

Municipal President Diego Castañón emphasized that this achievement is a testament to his commitment to citizens' rights and the preservation of beaches as public spaces for all. “The beaches belong to the people of Tulum and we cannot allow their access to be restricted. This agreement ensures that families can continue to enjoy them without having to pay, just by presenting their INE as it has always been done”, said Castañón. While the agreement guarantees free access, citizens have expressed the need for stronger strategies to maintain and protect the public beaches. The growing influx of tourists and property development in Tulum pose significant challenges to the conservation of these spaces, and the municipality has a duty to ensure their sustainability.

The municipal government has reiterated its commitment to the appropriate management of natural resources. It has pledged to work in collaboration with the federation and other entities to ensure that Tulum's public beaches remain a model of free access and environmental care. This agreement not only secures a vital right for Tulum's residents but also underlines the importance of protecting public spaces in a rapidly expanding tourist destination facing ongoing urbanization pressures.
