Tulum, a trendy tourist destination in the Mexican Caribbean, is set to enhance its security measures with the addition of 500 new security cameras. This move is part of a broader effort to improve safety in the increasingly popular hotspot. The announcement comes as Tulum continues to expand its infrastructure, including a new Tren Maya station. Tulum, known for Quintana Roo's largest and most popular Mayan site, is a top destination for historical and cultural travel in the region. It also offers white sand beaches, luxury resorts, and a vibrant nightlife.
With the recent addition of a new international airport, Tulum is preparing to welcome an influx of visitors. However, security remains a significant concern for many travelers. In response, officials are taking proactive steps to ensure the city's reputation for safety is upheld.
TULUM BOLSTERS SAFETY WITH NEW CAMERAS AND COMMAND CENTER
Tulum, a standout destination in the Mexican Caribbean, has seen a steady increase in visitor numbers since the opening of the expansive Felipe Carrillo International Airport.
The upcoming expansion of the Tren Maya's railway network to the southern resort center is set to attract more visitors from Cancún, drawn by the sun, sea, and rich Mayan history. However, this expected influx also raises concerns about potential increases in crime against tourists. While violent crimes are rare, minor offenses such as pickpocketing, scams, and reckless driving are ongoing issues.
In response, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón has announced a significant initiative to combat crime and protect tourists. The city plans to install up to 500 new security cameras and a state-of-the-art command center to monitor key areas in Tulum. The aim is to deter criminals and ensure a safe environment for the thousands of daily visitors.
All of Tulum's main tourist areas, from the Tulum Archaeological Zone to the coastal tourist area, will benefit from these new measures. Installation of the new surveillance cameras has already begun, with more expected to be operational in the coming months. The cameras will feed into Tulum's new C2 Command Center, allowing law enforcement to monitor the city in real time. Tulum officials are also enhancing cooperation with state and federal law enforcement agencies to further protect tourists from crime.
The imminent opening of the southern section of the Tren Maya station is set to bring thousands of day-trippers to Tulum. Alongside the new train station, a 350-room complex is under construction, offering high-quality accommodation for longer stays. Until now, reaching Tulum from Cancún required a lengthy bus ride or an expensive private transfer. The new train station will significantly improve accessibility to this popular destination.
