Plastic Threatens Tulum’s Crocodile Haven

Environmentalists and specialists are sounding the alarm over the increasing plastic pollution in Tulum's water bodies. This pollution poses a significant risk to local wildlife, particularly crocodiles. The issue, already prevalent in municipalities such as Benito Juárez and Solidaridad, could be disrupting the region's ecological balance.

Recent sightings of plastic waste in lagoons and cenotes near Tulum highlight the danger to crocodiles. According to Veterinary Zootechnician Javier Carballar, these reptiles can mistake plastic fragments for food. This confusion could lead to digestive obstructions and other health issues.

Similar incidents have been reported in Quintana Roo and Chiapas in past years, where deceased crocodiles were found with plastic remnants in their digestive systems. Experts warn that a decrease in the crocodile population due to pollution could disrupt the food chain, impacting other species and the overall ecosystem. As apex predators, a reduction in their numbers could set off a chain reaction affecting local biodiversity.

In response to this issue, environmental organizations are urging authorities to implement immediate waste control measures. Suggestions include stricter regulations on plastic disposal, public awareness campaigns, and increased monitoring of water bodies to prevent waste accumulation.

The business sector, particularly the tourism industry, is also being asked to help reduce the environmental impact of their activities. However, despite these warnings, tourist development in Tulum continues to progress without a waste management plan to mitigate its impact on ecosystems.

Environmentalists stress that without immediate action, the crocodile habitat in Tulum could face an ecological crisis similar to those seen in other parts of the state.
