Tulum’s Secret Electronic Music Scene: Unveiling Tax Transparency Issues

A collage featuring surreal scenes: ruined buildings fused with lush greenery, a massive circular structure with a figure diving through it, and a soccer player on a field, surrounded by a crowd

Councilor Jorge Portilla of Movimiento Ciudadano has called for a report on the revenue generated from large-scale electronic music events in Tulum. The request was made during a council meeting, with Portilla questioning the financial benefits these events bring to local and state government coffers.

During Tulum's peak electronic party season, 36 official events were held. Ticket prices for these events reached up to a thousand dollars each, generating substantial revenue for the municipality. However, there has been no information provided about the taxes event organizers are required to pay.

Portilla's request for this tax information has so far gone unanswered. This lack of transparency and accountability in what is a highly profitable industry has raised concerns. There are suspicions of corruption and mismanagement of funds, particularly given indications that local authorities may not be adequately overseeing these activities.

This situation has led to serious doubts about the integrity and legality of these electronic music events in Quintana Roo. Without clear information about the taxes paid by event organizers, questions remain about the true economic impact of these parties on the local community.
