José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum, tragically died in a hospital in Playa del Carmen. He was the victim of a violent attack that occurred in Tulum. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the gunshot wounds he sustained to his chest, back, and leg were ultimately fatal.
Rodríguez Bautista and his security escort were injured when they were targeted by two individuals on a motorcycle. One of the attackers was killed at the scene when the police chief and his escort returned fire. The assault took place around 8:30pm on Friday, at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 11th Street in the La Veleta neighborhood.
Following the attack, a significant security presence was established in the area, with personnel from all three levels of government securing the scene. Rodríguez Bautista was initially taken to the Costamed hospital in Tulum, but was later transferred to the IMSS-Bienestar Hospital in Playa del Carmen. He underwent surgery after reportedly being hit by six bullets. Despite the medical team's efforts, he did not survive his injuries.
The State Attorney General's Office is currently investigating the incident, seeking those responsible for the attack. This tragic event occurs amidst a rise in violence related to criminal groups in the popular tourist destination.
