Trash Threatens Turtle Nests in Mahahual – Urgent Action Needed

Various plastic waste and debris littering a natural coastal landscape, polluting the environment and highlighting a global ecological issue.

This nesting season in Costa Maya, turtles are encountering significant obstacles due to the large amounts of garbage washing up on the beaches of the popular tourist destination, Mahahual. The president of the "Proyecto Aak Mahahual" organization, Víctor Rosales Hernández, has highlighted that the problem of floating garbage in the Caribbean Sea remains unaddressed. This waste originates from various parts of the world, including South America, North America, Europe, and Asia.

The sheer volume of this waste is overwhelming for the international volunteers, university students, and fishermen who work tirelessly to tackle this environmental issue. The situation is not only detrimental to turtle nesting, but also negatively impacts the mangroves, reefs, and other marine species in the area, exacerbated by the influx of sargassum, hotel waste, and poaching activities.

Biologist Erik Eduardo Montejo Canul emphasizes the urgent need for new regulations and legislation in the state. These should address waste management, container recycling, and reuse strategies, among other measures, to effectively combat this ongoing environmental crisis.
