Tensions rose in Cancun recently when an Uber driver and a local taxi driver from the “Andrés Quintana Roo” union were involved in a confrontation outside the Kukulcán Plaza, near kilometer 13 in the Hotel Zone. The incident began when an Uber driver dropped off passengers at the plaza, which led to a taxi driver confronting him.
As the altercation escalated, the Uber driver reportedly retrieved a machete from his vehicle’s trunk, threatening the taxi driver. This event was captured on video by onlookers in the area, showing the Uber driver in a heated argument with the taxi driver.
The disagreement soon turned physical, with both individuals engaging in a brawl. A second video shows the taxi driver attacking the Uber driver, while bystanders can be heard calling 911 for assistance. The fight took place in front of numerous tourists outside the Kukulcán Plaza.
Social media users expressed their dismay at the situation following the circulation of the videos. While some criticized the taxi driver for initiating the physical confrontation, others argued that the Uber driver should not have brandished a machete. The consensus among most was that both parties were at fault.
In response to the incident, the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) announced severe sanctions for both drivers. The institute stated that the drivers’ licenses will be revoked, along with the concession of the involved vehicle. Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, the head of Imoveqroo, stated, “We have initiated an investigation into this case. The Institute will not tolerate any aggression or violence from drivers serving the public or private transport.”
