An Uber driver was violently assaulted by a group of rogue taxi drivers at Cancun International Airport. The incident, involving at least 20 taxi drivers, occurred as the Uber driver was picking up passengers who had requested his service.

The assault happened around midday on a recent Sunday. Upon seeing the Uber driver picking up passengers, the taxi drivers prevented the vehicle from leaving, threatening the driver and forcing him to release his passengers. Notably, local authorities witnessed the incident but did not intervene.

The group of taxi drivers then proceeded to attack the Uber driver, causing chaos and panic at the airport. The incident was recorded by witnesses present at the scene. This event highlights the ongoing security issues under the jurisdiction of Benito Juarez's Mayor, Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, who seems unable to control the taxi drivers or her police units.

Cancun's police officers have been accused of exceeding their authority, with this recent incident at the airport serving as a prime example. A private security guard had warned the public about these "pirate taxis," advising them to avoid units that lacked official insignia. However, federal agents detained this individual without providing substantial reasoning, further highlighting the regular abuse of power by uniformed officers in this popular tourist destination.

In response to the incident, social media users criticized Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta de la Peña, accusing her of failing to provide adequate public security for all residents. The severity of these issues has reportedly increased in recent months.
