Águeda Esperilla Soto, the representative for Uber's partner drivers in Cancún, has confirmed that she has lodged a complaint with the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) due to threats she has received. Soto believes that the culprits behind a threatening poster that recently appeared are unlicensed transport operators from the local airport. These individuals were reportedly upset when the National Guard released her and did not seize her vehicle during what Soto describes as an "ambush". She has stated that if any harm befalls her or her family, these individuals should be held responsible.
"I have filed a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office for the threats I've received," Soto stated at a press conference. "I have requested protective measures. My lawyers will be representing me and following up on my complaint against all those found responsible. I have video evidence showing everyone who has infringed upon my freedom."
One of Soto's lawyers, Moisés Araujo, elaborated that the complaint includes allegations of threats and illegal deprivation of liberty. This refers to an incident where several unlicensed taxis and National Guard patrols blocked Soto's path and attempted to detain her and confiscate her vehicle. Araujo emphasized that Soto is not involved in any illegal activities, as suggested by the alleged threat, and that she simply works as an Uber driver.
Soto also wanted to clarify that she is not involved in any illegal activities. "All we have done is speak out because our right to work has been restricted by the authorities for eight years. The Mobility and Traffic authorities, and now the National Guard, are curtailing our freedom," she stressed. She reiterated that if anything happens to her or her family, the unlicensed transporters from the airport should be held accountable.
Soto's lawyer and activist Fabiola Cortés added that Soto has received threats via Messenger, leading them to believe that she is at risk. They have requested access to security footage to identify the individual who posted the threatening banner. Soto concluded by expressing her belief that the National Guard appears to be protecting the transporters, as their actions go unpunished. She suggests that the National Guard is neglecting its duty to protect citizens, tourists, and platform operators.
