Uber’s Plea to AMLO: Will Cancún Operations Be Unrestricted?

Uber representatives are hopeful that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, often referred to as AMLO, will allow the company to operate without restrictions in Cancún before his term ends. This comes after a recent protest by Uber at Cancún Airport, where they condemned the alleged harassment and excessive fines imposed by the National Guard.

Águeda Esperilla, a representative for the drivers, voiced her frustration, stating, “The fines imposed on us are unjust.” This ongoing issue has prompted Uber to urge President AMLO to uphold his promise of unrestricted operations prior to the end of his term.

The plea from Uber follows an announcement from the Subdirectorate of Terminal and Ground Transportation of the ACIM. They indicated that the federal government is planning a reform to the Federal Road Transport Regulation. The proposed reform aims to simplify the process for ride-hailing services to access federal areas, a move that Uber views as crucial for its operations in Cancún.

In a letter to AMLO, Uber acknowledged the impending end of his administration, but expressed hope that this issue will be resolved before the transition to the next government. "For the safety of our drivers, our customers, and the growth of our nation, we request a resolution to this issue,” stated Uber representatives.

In early September, Uber's spokesperson in Cancún raised concerns about the ongoing harassment of their drivers, who have experienced detentions and vehicle impoundments following reports from unlicensed taxi drivers. Despite the current atmosphere of uncertainty, Uber remains optimistic about the prospect of unrestricted operations, a move that they believe will benefit both the company and its customers in the region.
