Rehabilitation Chaos: Cancun’s Tortugas Beach in Peril

The National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) had originally requested a budget of 1.7 million pesos to rehabilitate Tortugas beach in Cancun. Despite this, the project has been left in limbo with no clear indication of who will oversee the work.

Fonatur has handed over responsibility for the maintenance, cleaning, and operation of the wastewater treatment plants in Cancun's hotel zone to the state government. However, details regarding the body or mechanism that will take on these roles have not been clarified.

Fonatur has identified several issues at Tortugas beach, including unlicensed businesses, land encroachments, and substandard public services. The beach area is dotted with parking lots, restaurants, informal shops, and restrooms.

Some of these spaces have been sold to private entities, while others have been illegally occupied or developed without Fonatur's approval, violating land use regulations. The future of Tortugas beach remains uncertain as these issues continue to be unresolved.
