Good News! No New Fee for Cell Phone Photos at Chichén Itzá!

As summer vacation kicks off in 2024, Yucatán is expected to see a surge in tourist activity. The archaeological site of Chichén Itzá is anticipated to be one of the most popular destinations. However, there has been some confusion regarding a potential fee for taking photos with cell phones at the site.

In early June, it was announced that the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) would be imposing a fee of $60.00 pesos for taking photos with a cell phone. This led to some backlash as it was initially understood that all electronic devices would now incur a charge at the Chichén Itzá site.

The INAH has since clarified the details of this fee. It only applies to electronic video recording devices being used for commercial purposes, meaning content that is intended to be sold.

Therefore, there is no fee for bringing cell phones into the site for personal use. Visitors are free to take selfies or photos for personal enjoyment at Chichén Itzá. This applies to all visitors, whether they are local, national, or international tourists.
