The issue of suicide among minors is one that demands urgent attention. Neuropsychologist Dr. Judith Novelo, from the Center for Psychotherapy and Comprehensive Health, emphasizes the importance of understanding the various factors that can lead a child or adolescent to contemplate suicide. It is crucial for both parents and authorities to be able to identify the symptoms in order to prevent such tragedies.

In 2024, Quintana Roo reported 20 deaths in the age group of under 15 to 19 years old due to suicide. The main factors contributing to these cases range from psychological-emotional and social issues to family dynamics, economic struggles, and political pressures.

Dr. Novelo highlights that impulsive decision-making can be exacerbated by excessive use of social media and prolonged screen time on electronic devices. Recognizing this can be key in suicide prevention efforts.

Support networks play a vital role in helping minors cope with their struggles. It is important for these networks to be able to identify the symptoms of suicidal ideation and provide the necessary guidance and assistance.

Parents, in particular, need to be educated about suicide and mental health. This knowledge will help them identify warning signs in their children, such as expressions of guilt, feelings of hopelessness, or a stated lack of desire to live. Paying close attention to these signs can be critical in preventing suicide among minors.
