Rare Crocodile Found in Yucatán Cenote Sparks Rescue Mission

A tranquil cenote with crystal clear turquoise water surrounded by forest foliage and hanging roots, a person sits contemplatively at the edge on the top left side.

A team of crocodile rescue specialists was recently alerted to an unusual situation in Yucatán – a crocodile was found in a cenote, a natural sinkhole. This discovery caused concern and prompted immediate action for its rescue as crocodiles are not typically found in such environments, especially in open cenotes with a drop of over three meters.

The creature in question is a small Morelet's or swamp crocodile. Specialists from the UMA CHAN AAYIN – Crocodile Farm were dispatched to the cenote, located in the municipality of Santa Elena on the Colonia Yucatán-Kantunikil road.

Despite their efforts, the team was unable to successfully rescue the crocodile and will have to make a return trip to ensure the creature is safely returned to its natural habitat. Local residents believe the crocodile was intentionally thrown into the cenote six months prior, making its rescue and return to its natural environment all the more urgent.
