Leaders from several unions in Quintana Roo have announced a change of plans for their traditional May 1st observance. Instead of the usual parade, they will gather at the Explanada del Palacio Municipal in Cancún to voice a series of union demands.
Mario Machuca Sanchez, secretary of the Cancún CROC, revealed that the gathering will serve as a platform to advocate for a reduction in the working week to 40 hours. The union leader also stated that they will demand improved access to Infonavit financing for beneficiaries.
Arimael Salas, general secretary of Section 25 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), confirmed that his union will call for the repeal of the General Law of the System for Teachers' Careers, which they believe infringes on teachers' labor rights. They will also request better salaries and working conditions in all state schools from the relevant authorities.
Aaron Sanchez Jimenez, secretary of the COR in Quintana Roo, stressed that the unions are not politically motivated but are instead institutional. The demonstration will highlight the unity among workers, despite the "particular differences" between various unions.
