A distinctive protest recently occurred in Bacalar, sparked by construction projects undertaken by the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA). The projects, located on the shores of the lagoon near the historic San Felipe de Bacalar fort, are causing controversy due to their potential impact on the local landscape. Protestors argue that these changes will disrupt the way both locals and visitors appreciate the lagoon's view.

Amid the growing tension, a piece of art has emerged as a symbol of public sentiment. The painting, titled "The closest you will see the lagoon" and subtitled "Behind the Tourist Walls", was created by Learsy Esmeralda Puentes Hernández. The artwork encapsulates the essence of the protest.

Displayed during the protest, the painting depicts a future in which the lagoon can only be appreciated through a mural, once the construction near the fort is complete. This artistic representation has become a visual rallying cry for those advocating for the preservation of the natural view and the cultural identity of the area. The painting encourages contemplation on the potential impact of development projects on heritage and the environment.

Protestors argue that the painting is a means of condemning what they perceive as an irreversible sacrifice of nature that will permanently alter one of the region's most iconic landscapes.

So far, local authorities and SEDENA representatives have not provided official statements explaining the full intent of the project. In the meantime, citizens are uniting in their efforts to preserve the lagoon, advocating for the right to enjoy the landscape in its natural state, free from any alterations that could change its inherent character.

One protest organizer stated, "The painting is not just a work of art, it's a visual manifesto reminding us of what we stand to lose if we don't act to preserve our identity and surroundings." This sentiment encapsulates the community's concerns about a future where natural beauty could be hidden behind tourist walls. As the protests in Bacalar escalate, the community hopes that both the authorities and those responsible for the project will consider the demands and voices of the citizens, ensuring that development does not create an insurmountable barrier between the people and their natural heritage.
