Unregulated Yucatán Fleet Exposed: Hurricane Shipwrecks Reveal Violations

Two blue fishing boats, one named "JESUS 3," are stranded on dry land with debris around them under a clear sky.

Recent shipwrecks of the vessels 'Halcón I' and 'Peyucsa 12' have exposed certain violations that require comprehensive investigation and analysis, according to José Luis Carrillo Galaz, the president of the Mexican Confederation of Fishery and Aquaculture Cooperatives (Comeccop). Carrillo Galaz has voiced his concern over the existence of an unregulated fleet in Yucatán.

Carrillo Galaz explains that these boats, referred to as realzadas, are large, modified skiffs used for lengthy voyages. These vessels often venture far from the shore, making them vulnerable to shipwrecks in rough seas. He stresses the need to enforce the Navigation Law and thoroughly investigate these violations to prevent future tragedies like the recent shipwrecks.

Carrillo Galaz also points out the lack of oversight regarding the modifications made to these boats. This lack of control puts the lives of the fishermen who work in these hazardous conditions at risk.
