Relentless Sargassum Seaweed Onslaught on Isla Mujeres’ North Beach

Workers and a backhoe remove large piles of sargassum seaweed from a beach with buildings in the background

Over 150 tons of sargassum seaweed have been cleared from the beaches of Isla Mujeres recently, yet the seaweed continues to wash ashore relentlessly. Despite the ongoing efforts to combat this crisis, the seaweed keeps piling up, causing frustration among those working tirelessly to maintain clean, seaweed-free beaches.

Around 200 individuals, including Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT) brigades, local government staff, fishermen, housewives from the Temporary Employment Plan, and volunteers, have joined forces to tackle the constant influx of sargassum. The Mayor of Isla Mujeres has been overseeing the work in the area.

According to Dayana Alejandra Pérez Medina, the director of ZOFEMAT, only 150 linear meters of North Beach are affected by the seaweed. The rest of North Beach and Central Beach remain open to the public, with no visible sargassum, which typically washes up in a small bay area.

Despite initial hopes of clearing the affected section yesterday, more sargassum washed ashore overnight. It's anticipated that this unusual situation will persist for at least another two days.

Atenea Gómez, a local official, expressed gratitude for the hardworking cleanup crews and encouraged Isla Mujeres residents to join the brigades. The teams begin work at six in the morning and continue until the afternoon.
